A satirical etching by Hermanus Fock from the late eighteenth century, depicting soldiers in a commentary on the political climate of the Dutch Patriot era.
This etching by Hermanus Fock, titled 'Liedblad en spotprent met soldaten', serves as a piece of political satire from the late eighteenth century. The work depicts a soldier carrying a large basket on his back, within which two other figures are seated. The central figure, dressed in military attire, holds a baton and a small object, while the figures in the basket appear to be armed. The title 'De Koopman in Landzaaten' (The Merchant of Subjects) is printed clearly above the image, suggesting a commentary on the commodification of citizens or soldiers during the turbulent political climate of the Netherlands in the 1790s.
Fock, a Dutch artist known for his etchings and drawings, often engaged with the social and political realities of his time. The line work is precise and characteristic of the period, utilising hatching to create shadow and texture on the uniforms and the basket. The composition is straightforward, placing the figures against a minimal background to ensure the focus remains on the absurdity of the scene. The expressions on the faces of the soldiers are exaggerated, a common technique in satirical prints of the era intended to mock authority or military conduct. This print provides a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Patriot era, where such imagery was used to disseminate political opinions and critique the state of national affairs. The work is a fine example of how etching was employed as a medium for public discourse, blending artistic skill with biting social commentary.
