This etching by Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) depicts the Annunciation, a scene from the Life of the Virgin. Bourdon, a French painter and printmaker, was known for his classical style and his ability to synthesise various artistic influences, including those of the Italian Renaissance and the French Baroque. He spent time in Rome, where he studied the works of the Old Masters, and later became one of the founders of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. The print shows the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, bringing news that she will conceive and bear a son. The composition is filled with fine lines, creating a sense of depth and movement. The angel descends from a cloud of cherubic figures, while Mary sits in a humble interior, her expression a mixture of surprise and acceptance. The scene is framed by architectural elements and drapery, adding to the theatrical quality of the image. The Latin inscription at the bottom translates to: 'How welcome is the voice of the Angel, not so much of greeting, as of announcing the author of peace soon to come'.
