A geometric study by Sol LeWitt, featuring parallel lines in four distinct directions rendered in a spectrum of colours on a circular ceramic form.
Sol LeWitt is widely recognised for his systematic approach to art, where the concept or plan is the primary element of the work. This piece, rendered on a circular ceramic surface, demonstrates his interest in the permutation of basic visual units. The composition is divided into four quadrants, each containing parallel lines oriented in distinct directions: vertical, horizontal, and two diagonal angles. These lines are rendered in a spectrum of primary and secondary colours, creating a rhythmic, structured visual field.
LeWitt often utilised simple geometric forms to explore the relationship between order and variation. By restricting his palette and line orientation, he removed the subjective hand of the artist, allowing the underlying logic of the design to dictate the final appearance. The circular format of the plate introduces a contrast to the rigid, linear geometry contained within the central section. The outer border features organic, fluid shapes that break the strict grid, providing a counterpoint to the mathematical precision of the interior.
This work reflects the broader concerns of the Minimalist and Conceptual movements of the late twentieth century. LeWitt sought to create art that was accessible through its clarity and adherence to a set of rules. The repetition of the lines creates a sense of motion and optical vibration, drawing the eye across the surface in a predictable yet engaging manner. As a functional object, this plate bridges the gap between fine art and design, demonstrating how LeWitt applied his rigorous aesthetic principles to everyday items. The use of high-chroma colours ensures that the geometric structure remains legible, while the interplay between the central grid and the surrounding amorphous forms adds a layer of complexity to the overall design.
