A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting a snow-covered hill at Asukayama, featuring travellers on a quiet winter path.
Lingering Snow at Asukayama is a woodblock print from the series Eight Views in the Environs of Edo. Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Asukayama hill, a location known for its cherry trees and views of the surrounding countryside. The composition captures a quiet winter scene where a blanket of snow covers the slope and the branches of the trees.
In the foreground, travellers walk along the path, accompanied by a pack horse. Their figures are small, which emphasises the scale of the hill and the stillness of the winter air. Hiroshige uses a muted palette of greys and whites to convey the cold atmosphere. The sky is rendered with a subtle gradient, a technique known as bokashi, which adds depth to the print.
The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner provides context and poetic commentary on the scene. The trees are drawn with delicate, calligraphic lines, showing the artist's skill in capturing the skeletal forms of winter vegetation. This work demonstrates the aesthetic focus of the Ukiyo-e school on the changing seasons and the relationship between human activity and the natural environment.
Asukayama was a popular destination for outings during the Edo period. By choosing this subject, Hiroshige connects the viewer to the social life of the time while maintaining a focus on the visual qualities of the snow-covered terrain. The print is an example of the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with a sense of place. The careful placement of the trees and the figures creates a rhythmic composition that guides the eye across the slope. This print remains a representative example of Hiroshige's contribution to the landscape genre in Japanese woodblock printing.
