A satirical mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a greedy cleric, representing the sin of avarice through dramatic light and shadow.
This mezzotint by Jacob Gole, titled L'Insatiable, belongs to a series of satirical prints exploring human vices. The work depicts a cleric with a distorted, greedy expression, accompanied by a predatory animal lurking behind him. The circular composition focuses the viewer on the subject's exaggerated facial features, which convey a sense of gluttony and moral corruption. Gole, a Dutch engraver and publisher, was known for his technical skill in mezzotint, a process that allows for subtle gradations of tone and dramatic light effects.
The print includes a French verse below the image, which translates to: The Indies have provided me with immense riches, yet they do not appease my great hunger. I wish to return until the end, I surpass the Kings in my magnificence. This text clarifies the allegorical nature of the figure, who represents the sin of avarice. The animal, likely a wolf or similar beast, serves as a visual metaphor for the subject's insatiable nature and predatory behaviour.
The use of the mezzotint medium provides a velvety texture to the dark areas of the cleric's robes and the background, contrasting with the lighter, modelled skin tones of the face. This technique was particularly effective for creating the moody, atmospheric quality seen in Gole's work. The print is a characteristic example of early eighteenth-century European social satire, where religious figures were frequently depicted in unflattering ways to critique institutional greed. The work remains a compelling study of characterisation through caricature, demonstrating the artist's ability to combine technical precision with biting social commentary.
