A striking ink painting by Soga Shōhaku depicting lions navigating the dramatic, craggy landscape of the Stone Bridge at Mount Tiantai.
Soga Shōhaku, a prominent figure of the mid-Edo period, is known for his eccentric and highly individualistic approach to traditional ink painting. This work depicts the legendary Stone Bridge at Mount Tiantai, a site associated with Buddhist pilgrimage and the miraculous. Shōhaku fills the composition with a sense of dynamic energy, moving away from the restrained aesthetics of his contemporaries.
The scene features a series of lions, rendered with a distinctive, almost playful ferocity, navigating the precipitous cliffs and the natural stone arch. The artist employs sharp, angular brushwork to define the rock formations, creating a stark contrast with the softer, swirling clouds and the cascading water. The lions appear in various states of movement, some leaping across the void while others rest upon the jagged ledges. This juxtaposition of the solid, immovable stone bridge and the fluid, animated creatures creates a tension that is characteristic of Shōhaku's style.
The use of ink on silk allows for subtle gradations of tone, which Shōhaku uses to suggest depth and atmosphere within the mountainous terrain. The composition is vertical, drawing the eye from the base of the waterfall up towards the arch, where the lions congregate. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions at the top adds a layer of intellectual context, grounding the visual narrative in the literary and religious traditions of the time. Shōhaku rejects the polished, harmonious style favoured by the Kano school, opting instead for a raw, expressive quality that prioritises individual vision. This print captures the essence of his technique, preserving the fine details of the original ink work and the deliberate, forceful strokes that define his artistic identity.
