A refined 1889 genre painting by Eugene de Blaas, depicting a young woman carrying baskets of fruit in a classic Venetian setting.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was a prominent figure in the Venetian school of painting during the late nineteenth century. His work often focused on the daily lives of the Venetian working class, rendered with a high degree of technical precision and a polished finish characteristic of the Academic tradition.
In this composition, a young woman identified as Lisa is depicted carrying baskets of fruit. The figure is positioned against a simple architectural backdrop, featuring a weathered brick wall and a stone pillar. Her attire is meticulously detailed, from the floral pattern of her bodice to the layered skirts and blue stockings. The artist employs a controlled palette, balancing the warm tones of the peaches and the terracotta skirt with the cooler blue of the stockings and the neutral tones of the stone and wood.
De Blaas was known for his ability to capture a sense of calm and poise in his subjects. The lighting is soft and even, avoiding dramatic shadows to ensure that the focus remains on the figure and the textures of the baskets and fabric. The inclusion of the grapes atop the head basket and the peaches in the hand-held basket provides a sense of abundance, a common motif in his genre scenes. The painting reflects the artist's training in the Academy, where attention to anatomy, costume, and light was paramount. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, confirming its creation in 1889. This piece offers a clear example of the late Victorian interest in the picturesque qualities of Italian life, presented through a refined and disciplined artistic lens.
