A fine mezzotint by James McArdell, depicting the emotive figure of Lisabetta with masterful tonal contrast and atmospheric depth.
This mezzotint by James McArdell depicts the figure of Lisabetta, a character derived from Boccaccio's Decameron. The subject is shown in a moment of intense emotional gravity, her gaze directed away from the viewer as she rests her hand upon the head of her lover, Lorenzo. McArdell, an Irish-born engraver who worked primarily in London, was a master of the mezzotint process. This technique allowed for the creation of subtle tonal gradations, which are evident here in the soft transitions between the deep shadows of the background and the illuminated skin of the figure.
The composition relies on the dramatic contrast between light and dark, a hallmark of the period's interest in theatricality and emotional expression. The drapery of the figure's garment is rendered with fluid, sweeping lines, providing a sense of movement that balances the stillness of the subject's pose. McArdell was highly regarded for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil portraits into the medium of print, often working after masters such as Joshua Reynolds. In this instance, the print captures a narrative of mourning and loss, focusing on the psychological state of the protagonist rather than mere physical likeness.
As a mezzotint, the work possesses a velvety texture that is difficult to replicate in other printmaking forms. The dark, atmospheric background pushes the figure forward, creating a sense of immediate presence. This print serves as an example of the high level of technical skill present in eighteenth-century British printmaking, where engravers were essential in disseminating the visual culture of the era to a wider audience. The work remains a compelling study of light, shadow, and narrative tension, demonstrating the capacity of the mezzotint to convey complex human emotion through monochromatic depth.
