A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Ignazio Pavon, depicting the Road to Calvary after the composition by Raphael.
This engraving by Ignazio Pavon depicts the subject known as Lo Spasimo di Sicilia, or the Road to Calvary. The composition draws direct inspiration from the celebrated painting by Raphael, which historically resided in the church of Santa Maria dello Spasimo in Palermo. Pavon demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin, capturing the dramatic tension of the scene through varied tonal values and fine cross-hatching.
The central figure of Christ, burdened by the cross, occupies the lower foreground, surrounded by a crowd of soldiers and mourners. To the right, the Virgin Mary and her companions express grief, their postures reflecting the classical influence of the High Renaissance. The background features a structured, receding landscape that provides depth to the narrative, while the soldiers on horseback add a sense of movement and authority to the composition. Pavon manages the transition between the dark, heavy shadows of the foreground and the lighter, atmospheric distance with considerable skill.
As an engraver, Pavon was tasked with translating the painterly qualities of the original work into a monochromatic medium. He achieves this through a disciplined application of line, which defines the musculature of the figures and the folds of their garments. The print includes formal inscriptions at the base, characteristic of nineteenth-century reproductive engravings intended for both devotional use and the dissemination of art-historical knowledge. This piece offers a view into the tradition of printmaking that allowed audiences across Europe to engage with masterworks from Italian collections. The work remains a clear example of the Neoclassical preference for clarity, balanced composition, and emotional restraint in religious iconography.
