Description
Lochnagar in Aberdeenshire presents a dramatic amphitheatre of grey cliffs above dark teal water, with angular foreground boulders emphasising the scale and stillness of the enclosed scene.
South of the River Dee near Balmoral, the mountain belongs to the Mounth in the Grampians. A little loch in its north eastern corrie gives it its familiar name, and the great backwall rises roughly 200 metres above the water, attracting walkers and climbers.
Lochnagar fills the scene with a curved wall of grey cliffs, deeply shadowed on the left and sunlit along the right ridge. A dark teal lochan lies below the rock, bordered by green slopes and scattered scree. Large pale boulders occupy the foreground. The absence of snow and clear daylight suggest a summer visit to the high corrie.
