A detailed Mannerist drawing by Peter de Witte depicting King David and Saint Cecilia surrounded by angels and putti in a celestial musical scene.
This drawing by Peter de Witte, also known as Pietro Candido, captures a celestial concert featuring King David and Saint Cecilia. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the upper section, Saint Cecilia is positioned at an organ, surrounded by a group of angels playing various instruments, including a cello, trombone, and violin. The lower section features King David, crowned and seated, playing his harp. He is encircled by a ring of dancing putti, which adds a sense of movement and joy to the scene.
De Witte was a Flemish artist who spent much of his career in Italy and later at the court in Munich. His style reflects the influence of the Italian Mannerist tradition, particularly in the elongated figures and the complex, swirling arrangement of the clouds and drapery. The use of grey wash and white heightening creates a sense of volume and atmospheric depth, typical of the preparatory drawings produced in his workshop for larger altarpieces or prints. The figures are rendered with a fluid, calligraphic line that defines their forms while maintaining a sense of grace. The interaction between the figures, particularly the rhythmic dance of the putti, demonstrates the artist's skill in managing multi-figure compositions. This work provides an insight into the late sixteenth-century approach to religious iconography, where music is used as a metaphor for divine harmony. The technical execution, with its delicate tonal transitions, shows the artist's mastery of ink and wash techniques on paper.
