A striking 1915 portrait by Amedeo Modigliani, featuring his characteristic elongated forms and a muted, earthy colour palette.
Amedeo Modigliani painted this portrait in 1915, during his most active period in Paris. The work displays his signature approach to the human figure, characterised by elongated proportions and a simplified, mask-like facial structure. The subject, identified by the inscription on the left, is rendered with a deliberate lack of anatomical realism, favouring a stylised aesthetic that draws from both African sculpture and the Italian Renaissance tradition.
The palette is restrained, dominated by earthy ochres, browns, and muted tones that create a sense of quietude. Modigliani uses a thin application of paint, allowing the texture of the cardboard support to remain visible in certain areas. The composition is tight, focusing almost exclusively on the head and neck of the sitter. Her features, particularly the almond-shaped eyes and the slender, curved nose, are typical of the artist's mature style. The inclusion of the text 'LOL DE VALEN' serves as a graphic element, integrating the identity of the subject directly into the pictorial space.
Unlike his more polished oil portraits on canvas, this piece retains a raw, immediate quality. The brushwork is economical, defining the contours of the face with fluid, sweeping lines. The background is divided into geometric planes, providing a subtle contrast to the organic curves of the subject. This portrait offers a clear view into Modigliani's method of reducing the human form to its essential, rhythmic components. It avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the balance between line and colour. The result is a work that feels both archaic and modern, capturing a specific presence through a highly distilled visual language.
