A striking woodcut from William Nicholson's 1898 London Types series, depicting a mounted policeman with bold, graphic simplicity.
This print originates from the 1898 series London Types, a collection of woodcuts by William Nicholson that captured the diverse social fabric of the capital at the turn of the century. Nicholson utilised a restricted palette and bold, flat areas of colour to define his subjects, a technique influenced by the aesthetic of Japanese woodblock prints. The composition relies on strong silhouettes and minimal detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the essential character of the figure.
In this specific work, a mounted policeman is depicted against the architectural backdrop of Constitution Hill. The horse and rider are rendered with a sense of stillness, their forms simplified into clear, graphic shapes. Nicholson avoids unnecessary ornamentation, opting instead for a stark contrast between the dark uniform of the officer and the lighter tones of the horse and ground. The shadow cast by the horse provides a sense of grounding, anchoring the figure within the frame.
Nicholson was a master of the woodcut medium, often employing a limited range of inks to achieve maximum visual impact. His approach to portraiture and social observation was direct, eschewing sentimentality in favour of clarity. The London Types series remains a significant record of Edwardian urban life, documenting figures ranging from flower sellers to public servants. This print offers a glimpse into the visual language of the period, where graphic design began to merge with fine art practice. It is a study in economy of line and tone, demonstrating how much can be communicated through a disciplined application of colour and form.
