A satirical lithograph by Marius Bauer depicting a Don Quixote-like figure battling personified newspaper windmills, reflecting late 19th-century Dutch social critique.
This satirical lithograph by Marius Bauer, titled Loos alarm, offers a sharp commentary on the Dutch cultural and journalistic climate of the late nineteenth century. Bauer, known primarily for his Orientalist scenes and etchings, here adopts a more biting, allegorical approach. The composition features a figure reminiscent of Don Quixote, complete with armour and lance, engaged in a chaotic struggle against windmills. These windmills are personified with human faces and labelled with the names of contemporary Dutch newspapers, such as De Kroniek and Vaderland.
The central action involves a horse marked Kunstbode, which appears distressed, while another figure struggles atop a donkey. The inclusion of text, such as the speech bubble reading 't zel wel opklaeren', adds a layer of narrative urgency to the scene. The work functions as a critique of the press and the intellectual debates of the era, using the familiar literary motif of the errant knight to mock the futility of certain public controversies.
Bauer employs a loose, expressive line quality that captures the frantic energy of the scene. The shading is applied with a light, sketch-like touch, allowing the paper tone to provide the primary illumination. The composition is crowded, reflecting the noisy nature of the discourse it depicts. While Bauer is often associated with the exoticism of the Middle East, this piece demonstrates his ability to engage with domestic social themes through a lens of dark humour and historical allusion. The print serves as a record of the specific tensions within the Dutch art and literary circles of the 1890s, where the influence of the press on public opinion was a frequent subject of debate. The work is a fine example of the period's penchant for using classical literary figures to lampoon contemporary figures and institutions.
