A detailed 1820 engraving by Raphael Morghen depicting the Florentine statesman Lorenzo de' Medici, based on a drawing by Giorgio Vasari.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen, dated 1820, depicts Lorenzo de' Medici, the Florentine statesman and patron of the arts. Morghen was a master of the burin, and his technical precision is evident in the fine cross-hatching used to model the fabric of the subject's tunic and the subtle shading of his features. The composition is based on a drawing by Giorgio Vasari, capturing the subject in a contemplative, three-quarter profile pose. His hand rests upon a carved architectural element, which includes a grotesque mask, a detail that adds a layer of classical ornamentation to the scene.
Raphael Morghen was one of the most celebrated printmakers of his era, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the linear language of engraving. His work often focused on reproducing the likenesses of historical figures and classical subjects, aligning with the broader European interest in historical revivalism during the early nineteenth century. The print demonstrates the meticulous control required for high-quality intaglio work, where every line contributes to the overall volume and texture of the image. The soft, monochromatic palette relies on the contrast between the dark, dense lines of the clothing and the lighter, more open work in the background and skin tones. This piece is a fine example of the reproductive print tradition, which allowed the dissemination of portraiture and historical iconography to a wider audience beyond the original painted works. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the disciplined approach characteristic of the period's printmaking techniques.
