Albrecht Altdorfer's "Lot and His Daughters" captures a biblical scene with a blend of intimacy and drama, characteristic of the German Renaissance.
Albrecht Altdorfer's "Lot and His Daughters" depicts a scene from the Book of Genesis. Lot and his daughters are shown reclining under a green drape, with Lot holding a wine glass. In the background, another daughter sits in a field, while the city of Sodom burns. The composition blends the intimate foreground scene with the dramatic distant conflagration. Altdorfer's style combines elements of the German Renaissance with his own unique approach to colour and form. Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538) was a German painter, engraver, and architect of the Renaissance. He is considered one of the main representatives of the Danube School, which favoured expressive colourism and atmospheric settings. His work often incorporated religious and mythological subjects, as well as innovative treatments of nature.
