Part of Raphael's decoration of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace, 'Prime Mover' depicts a female figure on a celestial globe flanked by cherubs.
This fresco, titled 'Prime Mover', is part of the decoration of the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace, painted by Raphael (1483-1520). Raphael, an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, was commissioned by Pope Julius II to decorate these rooms, which became some of his most celebrated works. The Stanza della Segnatura, or Room of the Signatura, served as Julius II's library and private office. The frescoes in this room represent different branches of knowledge: theology, philosophy, poetry, and law. 'Prime Mover' is located in the vault of the room. It depicts a female figure, possibly representing Divine Wisdom or Philosophy, standing on a celestial globe. Two cherubs flank her, each holding a book. The globe itself is rendered with considerable detail, showing constellations and geographical features. The background is a mosaic-like gold, adding to the fresco's decorative quality. The composition is balanced, with the central figure dominating the space, while the cherubs add a sense of movement and dynamism.
