A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting an intimate genre scene from the series Love of Yatsufuji.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada, a prolific master of the Ukiyo-e school, originates from the series Koi no Yatsufuji. The composition captures a domestic scene, typical of the genre, where two figures are engaged in an intimate moment. Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was highly productive during the late Edo period, and his work often focused on the lives of actors, courtesans, and fictional characters from popular literature.
The print displays the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines associated with Japanese woodblock printing of the nineteenth century. The male figure wears a kimono featuring a distinct blue and white checked pattern, while the female figure is dressed in a darker garment adorned with floral motifs. The inclusion of text within a cartouche at the top of the image provides narrative context, a common feature in illustrated books or single-sheet prints intended to accompany a story. The colour palette relies on a balanced application of indigo, muted earth tones, and soft accents, which were achieved through the precise layering of woodblocks.
Kunisada was a central figure in the Utagawa school, and his output was vast. His ability to capture the nuances of human expression and textile patterns made his work popular among the urban population of Edo. This specific print demonstrates his skill in balancing the graphic elements of the clothing with the fluid lines of the figures. The scene is contained within a simple border, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the two subjects. As an example of nineteenth-century Japanese graphic art, this piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the period, where the depiction of daily life and romantic narratives held a significant place in the visual culture of Japan.
