A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, featuring narrative scenes from the Edo period with delicate line work and traditional composition.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu captures a narrative moment from the Edo period. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his innovations in print techniques and his contributions to the popularisation of the genre. The work displays the characteristic flat perspective and clean, calligraphic line work associated with early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
The composition is divided into two distinct scenes, a common format for illustrated books or narrative prints of the era. On the left, figures are depicted in an outdoor setting, interacting near a gate or fence. The right side shifts to an interior space, where a solitary figure sits at a low table, engaged in writing or contemplation. The use of space is balanced, with architectural elements providing structure to the figures. The colour palette is restrained, relying on traditional pigments that have aged to muted tones, which allows the focus to remain on the expressive postures and the surrounding calligraphic text.
Such prints were often produced as part of larger volumes, combining visual storytelling with literary elements. The inclusion of text within the image area serves to integrate the narrative directly into the composition. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the time, where the depiction of daily life and romantic themes formed the core of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The work provides a glimpse into the social customs and domestic environments of the period, presented through the refined lens of Masanobu's artistic practice.
