A classic Dutch Golden Age genre scene by Jan Steen, depicting a physician examining a young woman suffering from the traditional ailment of lovesickness.
Jan Steen, a master of Dutch Golden Age genre painting, frequently explored the theme of the lovesick woman in his work. This composition depicts a young woman seated on the edge of a bed, appearing pale and listless. A physician, dressed in a dark coat and hat, examines her pulse with a serious expression. The scene is set within a domestic interior, typical of the period, featuring a heavy bedstead and a small dog standing near a foot warmer in the foreground.
Steen employs a narrative approach to his subjects, often infusing his paintings with moralising undertones or subtle humour. The physician, a recurring figure in Steen's repertoire, is often portrayed with a degree of irony. In this instance, the diagnosis of lovesickness was a common trope in seventeenth-century medical and artistic discourse, often attributed to unrequited affection or melancholy. The woman's attire, including a white cap and a red jacket trimmed with fur, provides a contrast to the muted tones of the room. The light enters from a window at the rear, illuminating the interaction between the two figures while leaving the corners of the room in shadow.
Technically, the work demonstrates Steen's ability to render textures, from the heavy fabric of the physician's clothing to the soft sheen of the woman's blue skirt. The composition is balanced, with the physician leaning forward to create a diagonal line that draws the eye toward the patient. The presence of the dog and the foot warmer adds a layer of everyday realism to the scene, grounding the narrative in a recognisable domestic environment. This print captures the precise brushwork and the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, offering a view into the social and cultural preoccupations of the Dutch Republic.
