Description
Luing belongs to Argyll's Slate Islands south of Oban, where low green hills and scattered skerries surround coastal villages shaped by the quarrying of dark roofing stone.
In the Firth of Lorn, Luing forms part of the Slate Islands, roughly sixteen miles south of Oban. Cullipool and Toberonochy developed around slate working, an industry that continued on the island until 1965, leaving a distinctive heritage beside its indented shores.
Pale turquoise water spreads towards a low green coast with a handful of white cottages. Rounded hills rise behind the buildings, their slopes broken by dark rock faces and leafy pockets. Long grass and grey stones frame the near shore beneath a clear blue sky. The light suggests a bright summer afternoon, with soft shadows emphasising the folds in the grassy foreground.
