A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting two Ottoman military figures, a lieutenant and a captain, framed by decorative botanical borders.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two figures from the Ottoman military hierarchy, specifically a lieutenant and a captain of the Janissaries. Produced during the late sixteenth century, the work reflects the European fascination with the dress and social structures of the Ottoman Empire. De Bruyn, a skilled engraver based in Antwerp, was known for his systematic documentation of contemporary costumes from various regions and cultures.
The composition features two distinct panels, each framed by a decorative border containing botanical and avian motifs. The left panel shows a lieutenant mounted on horseback, wearing a tall, plumed headdress and traditional military attire. The right panel presents a captain in a similar pose, also mounted and equipped with ceremonial weaponry. The figures are rendered with precise, thin lines, typical of the period's printmaking techniques. The Latin and German inscriptions provide identification for the subjects, serving as a visual record for a sixteenth-century audience interested in foreign customs.
The surrounding borders add a layer of ornamental detail, contrasting with the relatively austere depiction of the soldiers. These frames include various fruits, flowers, and birds, which were common decorative elements in the print series of the era. The paper shows signs of age, including discolouration and wear, which provides a sense of the object's history as a surviving document from the early modern period. This print is a clear example of the ethnographic interest that characterised the work of Flemish and Dutch printmakers during the late Renaissance, who sought to catalogue the diversity of human appearance and rank across the known world. The work remains a valuable reference for historians studying the intersection of European print culture and Ottoman military history.
