A detailed allegorical drawing by the German Renaissance master Heinrich Aldegrever, depicting the personification of Luxuria with a boar.
This drawing by Heinrich Aldegrever depicts the personification of Luxuria, or Lust, a common theme in sixteenth-century moralising art. Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, was highly skilled in the production of small-scale engravings and drawings that often explored classical mythology and Christian allegory. In this composition, the female figure stands with a boar at her feet, a traditional attribute associated with the vice of lust. She holds a vessel in one hand and a tall, cylindrical object in the other, her posture suggesting a classical contrapposto stance typical of the period.
The artist employs fine pen work combined with delicate grey washes to model the form and the folds of the drapery. The line quality is precise, reflecting the training of an artist who spent much of his career creating detailed prints. The background remains sparse, allowing the focus to rest entirely upon the allegorical figure and her animal companion. The inclusion of the boar serves as a visual shorthand for the base appetites, a device frequently utilised by Northern Renaissance artists to communicate complex moral narratives to a literate audience.
Aldegrever was based in Soest and was influenced by the work of Albrecht Dürer. His output often featured figures with elongated proportions and a sense of physical grace that bridged the gap between late Gothic traditions and the burgeoning influence of the Italian Renaissance. This work demonstrates his ability to combine technical draftsmanship with symbolic content. The subtle application of wash provides depth to the figure, creating a sense of volume without the need for heavy shading. This print captures the essence of Aldegrever's graphic style, offering a glimpse into the intellectual and artistic preoccupations of the mid-sixteenth century in Germany.
