Description
Lybster on the Highland Caithness coast encloses still blue harbour water between pale piers, with a white red capped light and a small fishing boat beneath bright summer clouds.
Lybster’s sheltered harbour on the eastern Caithness coast supported a substantial nineteenth century herring industry. General Patrick Sinclair established the planned village in 1802. The Waterlines heritage centre by the harbour tells the story of the local fishing community and its relationship with the sea.
The harbour basin fills the lower view, enclosed by broad grey quays and a long outer breakwater. A white light with a red cap rises from the right pier, opposite a small white boat with a red stripe. A pitched roof shed and coloured boxes occupy the quay. Beyond the grass banks, blue open sea meets a high bank of white summer cloud.
