A refined ink and colour painting by Huang Shen depicting the Taoist figure Ma-gu with a deer, symbolising longevity and grace.
Huang Shen, a member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, created this work in 1751. The painting depicts Ma-gu, a legendary Taoist figure associated with longevity and youth. She is shown in a standing posture, holding a ritual vessel, accompanied by a deer, which is a traditional symbol of prosperity and long life in Chinese iconography. The deer carries a basket of flowers on its back, adding a decorative element to the composition.
The artist employs a calligraphic brush technique, characteristic of his mature style. The lines defining the robes of Ma-gu are fluid and expressive, demonstrating the artist's ability to balance spontaneity with structural precision. The facial features are rendered with minimal strokes, conveying a sense of serenity and grace. The colour palette is restrained, relying on subtle washes of ink and light pigments to define the forms against the neutral background.
This piece reflects the artistic climate of the Qing Dynasty, where painters often moved away from rigid academic traditions toward more individualistic expressions. Huang Shen was known for his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through rapid, confident brushwork. The inclusion of the deer and the floral basket provides a narrative depth, linking the figure to mythological themes of immortality. The vertical orientation of the scroll format allows for a balanced arrangement of the figure and the animal, creating a harmonious visual experience. The work remains a clear example of the literati painting tradition, where the artist's personal style and technical skill take precedence over strict realism.
