Description
Machir Bay on Islay follows pale sand towards rugged green headlands, with white surf curling across turquoise water and long dune grasses beneath a high, bright summer sky.
Near Kilchoman on the western Rhinns of Islay, this Atlantic-facing bay has rocky margins and a broad sandy beach. Small streams reach the shore from the surrounding land, while Coul Point separates it from Saligo Bay farther along the island's coast.
At Machir Bay, successive white waves sweep diagonally towards a long cream beach. Green dunes and dark rocky slopes rise behind the sand, with several thin masts on the central headland. Long grasses fill the nearest corner. Bright blue sea and a generous spread of white cloud give the exposed shore the clear colours of a summer day.
