Description
Machrie sets Arran's prehistoric stones within North Ayrshire's open moorland, where low standing blocks, wet grass and heather lead towards the island's blue mountain ridges beneath pale summer clouds.
On the Isle of Arran in North Ayrshire, Machrie Moor preserves a rich prehistoric landscape. Stone circles, standing stones, hut circles and cairns occupy the area, showing that the moor's history includes both ceremonial monuments and the remains of earlier settlement and farming.
Low pale stones form a loose circle around a wet grassy hollow. Blue pools reflect the clouds, with russet heather and green scrub spreading towards distant mountains. One taller block stands near the left edge, balanced by smaller stones across the lawn-like grass. Full trees and warm light suggest late summer, giving the prehistoric setting a gentle scale within the broader island landscape.
