A 1986 screenprint by Richard Foster Yarde depicting Madam C.J. Walker in an early motorcar, rendered in bold, graphic planes of colour.
Richard Foster Yarde, a noted American watercolourist and printmaker, produced this screenprint in 1986. The work depicts Madam C.J. Walker, the pioneering entrepreneur and philanthropist, seated in an early twentieth-century motorcar. Yarde employs a distinctive visual language, utilising bold, flat planes of colour and simplified forms to capture the essence of the scene. The composition avoids traditional perspective, favouring a graphic arrangement that emphasises the silhouettes of the figures and the mechanical structure of the vehicle.
The palette is restricted to specific tones: deep charcoal, bright red, muted ochre, and a cool blue. These colours are applied in distinct blocks, creating a sense of rhythmic movement across the paper. The figures, dressed in period-appropriate hats and attire, are rendered with minimal detail, yet their presence remains clear. Yarde often drew inspiration from historical photographs, reinterpreting them through his own stylistic lens to explore themes of identity and American history.
In this print, the background is suggested by geometric shapes, providing a sense of place without resorting to literal representation. The white space of the paper acts as an active element, defining the edges of the car and the road. This approach reflects Yarde's interest in the intersection of historical narrative and modern graphic design. The print is signed and numbered, typical of his limited edition output. It offers a clear example of his ability to distil complex historical subjects into accessible, visually arresting imagery. The work invites the viewer to consider the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker through a lens that is both retrospective and stylistically contemporary.
