A refined Renaissance engraving by Girolamo Mocetto, depicting the Madonna and Child seated on an architectural throne.
This engraving by Girolamo Mocetto depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon a formal throne, holding the Christ Child. Mocetto, a Venetian artist active during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, was known for his work as a painter, glass designer, and printmaker. His style reflects the influence of the Bellini family and the broader Venetian school, yet his engravings often display a distinct linear quality that separates his graphic output from his painted works.
The composition is structured around the central figure of the Madonna, whose heavy drapery falls in deep, angular folds. The throne itself is rendered with architectural precision, featuring classical elements that provide a stable, geometric frame for the figures. The Christ Child is positioned on the Virgin's lap, his form modelled through a series of parallel and cross-hatched lines that define the musculature and volume of his body. The Virgin holds a small book in her right hand, a common iconographic element in devotional imagery of the period, suggesting themes of wisdom and scripture.
Mocetto utilised the burin to create a range of tonal values, from the deep shadows within the folds of the fabric to the lighter, more delicate lines used to define the facial features. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two figures. The work demonstrates the technical capabilities of early Italian printmaking, where the artist sought to translate the weight and presence of sculptural forms into a two-dimensional medium. This print offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the Venetian Renaissance, where clarity of form and balanced composition were primary concerns for artists working in both painting and the graphic arts.
