His personal life was unconventional; he eloped with a nun, Lucrezia Buti, who later became the mother of his son, Filippino Lippi, also a painter. This painting depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child. Mary is dressed in a red gown and a dark blue cloak, while the child is wrapped in red cloth. Both figures are adorned with golden halos. The background features a simple architectural setting with blue and white tones.
