A classic High Renaissance composition by Lorenzo Lotto, featuring the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Peter Martyr in a serene, atmospheric setting.
This composition by Lorenzo Lotto, dating to his early period, displays the stylistic traits of the Venetian school during the transition into the sixteenth century. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, accompanied by Saint Peter Martyr. The figure of the saint is identifiable by the cleaver embedded in his skull, a reference to his martyrdom, and his Dominican habit. Lotto places these figures against a backdrop that combines a domestic interior setting with an expansive, atmospheric view of a rural Italian town.
The artist employs a balanced arrangement, typical of the period, yet introduces a specific psychological tension through the interaction of the figures. The Christ Child reaches toward the saint, while the Virgin Mary offers a gesture of blessing or protection. Lotto uses a palette of deep reds, blues, and the stark black of the Dominican habit to create visual weight. The lighting is soft, allowing for subtle modelling of the skin tones and the drapery of the garments.
Lotto was known for his idiosyncratic approach to portraiture and religious narrative, often favouring a degree of emotional intimacy that departed from the more rigid conventions of his contemporaries. In this work, the inclusion of the landscape provides a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground figures toward the distant hills and sky. The painting reflects the technical proficiency of the Venetian tradition, particularly in the handling of oil glazes and the depiction of natural light. This print captures the textures of the original panel, from the fine details of the saint's palm frond to the varied tones of the sky, offering a clear view of Lotto's early mastery of form and colour.
