A detailed 1829 engraving by Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger, reproducing a Renaissance painting of the Madonna and Child with the infant Saint John.
This engraving by Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger reproduces a painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Vincenzio da San Gimignano. Krüger, a German engraver active in Dresden, produced this work in 1829, reflecting the period's interest in documenting the holdings of the Royal Gallery of Dresden. The print captures the composition of the original painting, which depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist.
The composition follows a traditional pyramidal structure common in High Renaissance art. The Virgin is positioned centrally, her gaze directed downward toward the children. Her expression is calm, and her posture is relaxed. The Christ Child is shown in a dynamic pose, reaching toward the infant Saint John, who offers a gesture of devotion. Behind them, a heavy curtain hangs to the right, while to the left, a distant view of a rolling countryside provides a sense of depth. The figures are rendered with precise lines and subtle tonal gradations, characteristic of the engraving techniques employed by Krüger to translate the painterly qualities of the original oil work into a monochromatic medium.
Krüger was known for his technical skill in reproducing works from the Dresden collection. This print demonstrates his ability to manage light and shadow, particularly in the modelling of the figures and the folds of the drapery. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the bilingual inscription at the base of the print indicates its status as an official reproduction intended for scholarly or archival purposes. The work remains a clear example of the nineteenth-century practice of disseminating knowledge of European masterworks through high-quality printmaking.
