A devotional panel by Vittore Crivelli featuring the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and two angels, rendered with fine detail and gold leaf.
Vittore Crivelli, a Venetian painter active in the Marches region of Italy, produced this devotional panel during the late fifteenth century. The work displays the stylistic traits associated with the Crivelli family, particularly the use of decorative surfaces and precise, linear definition. The Virgin Mary is depicted in a central position, wearing a crown and an elaborate, gold-brocaded mantle. She holds the Christ Child, who clutches a small bird, a common iconographic element in Renaissance art representing the soul or the future Passion.
Two angels flank the central figures, their expressions serene and their hands positioned in prayer. The composition is framed by a shallow space, typical of the period, where the figures are set against a backdrop that includes hanging fruit, a motif often found in the works of Vittore and his brother, Carlo Crivelli. The attention to detail in the textiles, the jewellery, and the open book resting on the ledge demonstrates the artist's focus on material texture and ornamental finish. The signature of the artist, 'OPVS VICTORIS CRIVELLI VENETI', is inscribed clearly along the bottom edge of the painting.
This panel reflects the transition from the International Gothic style to the more structured forms of the Renaissance. The use of tempera allows for a crispness in the rendering of the figures, while the application of gold leaf provides a luminous quality to the halos and the Virgin's garments. The work remains a clear example of the regional artistic output in the Adriatic territories during this era, where traditional religious iconography was combined with a high degree of decorative refinement. The balanced arrangement of the figures and the symbolic inclusion of the fruit and the book invite quiet contemplation, consistent with the intended function of such devotional images in private or ecclesiastical settings.
