A tender Baroque depiction of the Madonna feeding the Christ Child, rendered with the characteristic naturalism and dramatic lighting of Bernardo Strozzi.
Bernardo Strozzi, a prominent figure of the Genoese Baroque, demonstrates his mastery of naturalism and light in this depiction of the Madonna and Child. Known as the Madonna della pappa, or the Madonna of the Porridge, the composition captures a domestic, humanised moment between mother and infant. Unlike the formal, distant icons of earlier centuries, Strozzi presents the Virgin Mary in the act of feeding the Christ Child, a scene grounded in the everyday reality of maternal care.
The artist employs a tenebrist approach, where the figures emerge from a dark, indistinct background. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the tactile quality of the skin, the folds of the fabric, and the gentle interaction between the two subjects. The Virgin holds a spoon, her expression one of quiet concentration, while the Child sits on her lap, his gaze directed outward with a sense of playful curiosity. Strozzi's brushwork is fluid and confident, characteristic of his training in Genoa and his later influence from Venetian painters like Veronese.
The colour palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, with the deep red of the Virgin's sleeve providing a visual anchor against the muted ochre of her shawl and the soft, pale flesh tones of the infant. The composition is balanced and intimate, avoiding unnecessary ornamentation to focus on the emotional connection between the figures. This work reflects the Counter-Reformation emphasis on making religious subjects accessible and relatable to the faithful. By stripping away the grand architectural settings often found in religious art of the period, Strozzi creates a scene that feels immediate and personal. The focus remains on the humanity of the subjects, rendered with a sensitivity that defines Strozzi's contribution to the seventeenth-century Italian tradition.
