This work constitutes the central panel of the Recanati Polyptych, commissioned for the church of San Domenico in Recanati. Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, demonstrates his command of spatial construction and characterisation within this composition. The Madonna sits upon a throne, holding the Christ child, while flanked by St. Dominic and St. Gregory. St. Urban is also present, contributing to the theological narrative of the piece.

The architectural setting, featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling with coffered details, provides a sense of depth and structure. Lotto employs a specific approach to light and shadow, which defines the figures and their garments.
