The central panel of the Recanati Polyptych by Lorenzo Lotto, depicting the Madonna and Child with saints and angels in a vaulted architectural setting.
This work constitutes the central panel of the Recanati Polyptych, commissioned for the church of San Domenico in Recanati. Lorenzo Lotto, a Venetian painter active during the High Renaissance, demonstrates his command of spatial construction and characterisation within this composition. The Madonna sits upon a throne, holding the Christ child, while flanked by St. Dominic and St. Gregory. St. Urban is also present, contributing to the theological narrative of the piece.
The architectural setting, featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling with coffered details, provides a sense of depth and structure. Lotto employs a specific approach to light and shadow, which defines the figures and their garments. The presence of angels, including those positioned at the base of the throne, adds a layer of movement to the otherwise static arrangement of saints. The inclusion of a kneeling figure to the left introduces a human element, bridging the gap between the viewer and the sacred subjects.
Lotto was known for his individualistic approach, often diverging from the stylistic norms of his contemporaries in Venice and Rome. His work here displays a careful balance between the monumental scale required for an altarpiece and the psychological nuance he brought to his portraiture. The colour palette remains grounded, utilising deep reds, blues, and the warm tones of the architectural stone. This panel remains a significant example of early sixteenth-century Italian religious art, reflecting the transition from the Quattrocento style to the more complex compositions of the later Renaissance period.
