A portrait of Mary Magdalene reading, by Italian Renaissance painter Piero di Cosimo. The work is characterised by its contemplative mood and restrained colour palette.
Piero di Cosimo, born Piero di Lorenzo, was an Italian Renaissance painter known for his eccentric personality and distinctive artistic style. He trained under Cosimo Rosselli, from whom he derived his adopted name, and was influenced by the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Hugo van der Goes. His paintings often feature mythological and allegorical subjects, characterised by their imaginative details and unique blend of realism and fantasy. 'Magdalena Reading' depicts Mary Magdalene, a prominent figure in Christian tradition, absorbed in reading a book. She is portrayed with long, flowing auburn hair, adorned with a delicate headband. Her gaze is directed downwards, focused on the text before her. The colour palette is restrained, with greens, reds, and yellows dominating the composition. The background features a glimpse of a serene landscape, adding to the contemplative mood of the piece. The inclusion of the iris flower, a symbol of sorrow, alludes to Mary Magdalene's traditional association with repentance and mourning.
