A sixteenth-century Flemish engraving depicting the personification of Magnanimity, featuring a crowned figure with a lion.
This engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the personification of Magnanimitas, or magnanimity. The figure stands within a shallow, arched architectural niche, a common device in sixteenth-century printmaking to provide spatial depth. She wears a crown and holds a sceptre, symbols of her noble status and authority. Beside her, a lion rests, serving as the traditional iconographic attribute for this virtue, representing strength, courage, and nobility of spirit.
Collaert employs a precise engraving technique, using varied line weights to define the folds of the drapery and the texture of the lion's mane. The cross-hatching creates shadows that give the figure a sense of volume against the background. The composition is balanced and formal, reflecting the humanist interest in classical virtues that permeated the artistic circles of the Low Countries during the late sixteenth century. The Latin inscription at the base identifies the subject clearly, a standard practice for allegorical series of the period.
As a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, Collaert was well-versed in the stylistic conventions of the time. His work often focused on religious, mythological, or allegorical themes, produced for a market that valued both technical skill and moral instruction. This print is a fine example of the period's dedication to clear, readable iconography, where every element, from the posture of the figure to the presence of the animal companion, contributes to the communication of the specific virtue. The print demonstrates the technical rigour of the Flemish school, where the engraver's burin was used to achieve a high degree of clarity and detail, ensuring the allegorical message remained accessible to the viewer.
