A refined Rajput miniature painting from the Mewar School, depicting Maharana Amar Singh II on horseback, rendered with delicate stippling and gold accents.
This miniature painting originates from the Mewar court in Rajasthan, India, during the early eighteenth century. It depicts Maharana Amar Singh II, a ruler of the Mewar kingdom, mounted upon a dark blue horse. The composition follows the conventions of Rajput courtly art, where the monarch is presented in profile, his status indicated by the presence of attendants and the ceremonial parasol held aloft behind him. The artist, known as the Stipple Master, employs a distinctive technique of fine dotting to create volume and texture, particularly visible in the shading of the horse and the figures.
The scene is set against a pale, neutral background, which allows the figures to occupy the primary visual space. In the distance, architectural elements suggest a palace complex and a shrine, rendered with a flattened perspective typical of the period. The foreground features small, stylised floral tufts, a common motif in Mewar painting that provides a sense of place without distracting from the central equestrian subject. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, creams, and the deep blue of the horse to create a balanced visual harmony.
This work reflects the courtly culture of the Mewar rulers, who commissioned numerous paintings to document their activities, including hunting, processions, and religious observances. The attention to detail in the clothing, weaponry, and horse trappings provides insight into the material culture of the Rajput nobility. The use of gold leaf adds a subtle metallic sheen to the parasol and the Maharana's attire, signifying his royal authority. The painting is a representative example of the technical precision achieved by artists working under royal patronage in Rajasthan during this era.
