Franz Kline
A powerful example of Abstract Expressionism, Mahoning features bold, black gestural strokes against a white ground, evoking industrial structures.
Mahoning, painted in 1956, represents the mature phase of Franz Kline's work. It features a stark, monochromatic palette of black and white. The composition consists of broad, aggressive brushstrokes that intersect to form a structural, girder-like arrangement. These forms suggest industrial architecture or the skeletal frames of bridges and buildings, reflecting the artist's upbringing in the coal-mining regions of Pennsylvania. Kline developed his signature style after projecting small ink sketches onto a wall, which allowed him to enlarge his gestural marks to a monumental scale. In this work, the black paint does not merely sit on top of the white background; it interacts with the negative space, creating a sense of tension and physical weight. The drips and splatters visible along the edges of the black forms reveal the speed and force of the artist's application. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on colour field painting, Kline maintained a focus on the structural integrity of the mark itself. This piece avoids representational imagery, yet it retains a sense of physical presence. The balance between the white ground and the black structure creates a dynamic equilibrium. The work is held in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. It remains a primary example of the gestural approach common to the New York School during the mid-twentieth century. The scale of the original canvas provides an immersive experience, where the viewer is confronted by the sheer physicality of the paint and the deliberate, forceful nature of the composition.
