This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Maisaka, the thirty-first stop on the Tokaido road. As part of the Reisho Tokaido series, the work demonstrates the artist's mature approach to composition and colour. The scene captures a quiet moment along the coast, where travellers and porters navigate the shoreline near the water.

In the foreground, figures carry goods, their forms rendered with clear, deliberate lines. To the left, boats are moored, their masts reaching toward the upper edge of the frame. The middle ground features a small island with pine trees, while the background is dominated by a large, green mountain range. The sky transitions from a pale yellow near the horizon to a deep, saturated red at the top, a characteristic technique used by Hiroshige to suggest the time of day and atmospheric conditions.

The Reisho Tokaido series is named for the style of the cartouches, which use the reisho (clerical) script. Unlike his earlier, more famous Hoeido series, these prints often feature a more restrained palette and a focus on the daily activities of those travelling the route. The composition balances the human element with the natural environment, creating a sense of calm observation. The print reflects the technical precision of the Edo period woodblock printing process, where multiple blocks were carved and inked to achieve the final image. This work provides a view into the travel culture of nineteenth-century Japan, documenting the geography and social life of the Tokaido road.
