Maisaka: View of Imagiri - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the station of Maisaka, situated along the Tokaido road. It forms part of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, published by Hoeido. The composition captures the crossing at Imagiri, a narrow inlet that required travellers to navigate by boat. Hiroshige employs a distinct perspective, placing the viewer on the shore among a series of vertical wooden posts that define the foreground. These elements create a sense of depth, drawing the eye across the water toward the rocky promontory that dominates the centre of the frame.

The colour palette relies on the use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible to Japanese printmakers during this period. The sky transitions from a pale, warm tone at the horizon to a deeper hue above, while the water reflects these shifts in light. In the distance, the faint silhouette of Mount Fuji appears, providing a sense of geographical context. Small boats are scattered across the inlet, their occupants rendered with minimal detail, which emphasises the scale of the natural surroundings. The right side of the print features a large, pale structure, likely a screen or wall, which balances the composition against the dark, textured mass of the mountain.

Hiroshige was known for his ability to convey atmospheric conditions and the specific character of a location. His approach to this series moved away from the focus on human figures seen in earlier works, shifting instead toward the depiction of travel and the physical environment of Japan. The technical execution of the woodblocks allows for subtle gradations in colour, particularly in the sky and water, which were achieved through the skilled application of ink during the printing process. This work remains a representative example of the Ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period.
