A 1996 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring fluid, gestural marks and rhythmic, wave-like patterns that evoke the movement of music.
Making Music, a lithograph produced by Helen Frankenthaler in 1996, captures the artist's characteristic approach to printmaking. Frankenthaler, a central figure in the development of American abstraction, applied the same fluid, gestural techniques to her prints as she did to her large-scale canvases. This work demonstrates her mastery of the soak-stain method, where thinned pigment is absorbed directly into the paper, creating soft, atmospheric edges and translucent layers of colour.
The composition is defined by a large, sweeping arc of yellow that frames the central area. Within this space, Frankenthaler introduces a series of linear marks and rhythmic, wave-like patterns that suggest musical notation or the movement of sound. These marks contrast with the more spontaneous, fluid splashes of colour that appear to float across the surface. The interplay between the structured, grid-like elements and the organic, free-flowing forms creates a sense of balance and visual tension.
Frankenthaler often collaborated with master printers to push the boundaries of the medium. In this piece, the layering of ink and the variation in line weight reflect her interest in the physical properties of the materials. The white space of the paper is not merely a background but an active participant in the composition, providing a sense of openness and light. The work avoids rigid geometry, favouring instead a lyrical, improvisational quality that invites the viewer to engage with the visual rhythm of the marks. By combining delicate, calligraphic lines with broader, saturated washes, Frankenthaler creates a work that feels both immediate and considered. This print offers an insight into her later career, where she continued to explore the relationship between colour, gesture, and space, maintaining a focus on the expressive potential of abstract forms.
