A detailed woodcut by Hans Weiditz depicting the Man of Sorrows, showcasing the technical precision of Northern Renaissance printmaking.
This woodcut by Hans Weiditz depicts the Man of Sorrows, a devotional subject common in Northern Renaissance art. The figure of Christ is shown seated upon the cross, his posture conveying exhaustion and physical suffering. He holds a reed, and the crown of thorns is visible upon his head. The Latin inscription 'ECCE HOMO' appears to the right, identifying the scene as the moment of Christ's presentation to the people.
Weiditz, a student of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates a mastery of the woodcut medium through his use of varied line weights. The hatching techniques create volume in the musculature and texture in the drapery, while the background remains relatively simple to focus attention on the central figure. The print utilises a chiaroscuro effect, where the interplay of light and shadow defines the form against the paper.
This work reflects the period's focus on personal piety and the contemplation of Christ's passion. The composition is compact, typical of small-scale devotional prints intended for private use or inclusion in prayer books. The anatomical rendering shows the influence of German graphic traditions, where the focus is on the expressive potential of the human form. The print is a clear example of the technical skill required to produce such detailed imagery from a single block of wood. The lines are precise, allowing for the subtle modelling of the torso and the sorrowful expression on the face of Christ. This piece offers a view into the artistic practices of the early sixteenth century, where printmaking allowed for the dissemination of religious imagery to a wider audience.
