A nineteenth-century wood engraving by Isaac Weissenbruch depicting a moralising street scene in a Dutch town, accompanied by didactic verse.
This wood engraving by Isaac Weissenbruch originates from the publication 'Prenter-Magazijn voor het Nederlandsche Volk'. The image depicts a street scene in a Dutch town, capturing a moment of moral observation. A man stands on the pavement, watching another individual exit a shop specialising in distilled spirits. The storefront is clearly marked with the word 'GEDISTELEERD', indicating its function as a liquor store. The architectural details, including the cobblestone street and the traditional Dutch facade, provide a specific sense of place and time.
Below the illustration, the text references 'Spreuk 23, vs. 21', a biblical proverb often associated with warnings against drunkenness and gluttony. The accompanying Dutch verse serves as a moralising commentary on the social conditions of the working class, suggesting that the wages of labourers are often squandered on alcohol. This work reflects the nineteenth-century tradition of using visual media to convey didactic messages to the public, blending artistic observation with social critique.
Weissenbruch employs a precise, linear style characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century wood engraving. The hatching and cross-hatching techniques define the shadows and textures of the brickwork and the figures' clothing. The composition is structured to draw the eye from the observer on the left to the shop entrance on the right, creating a narrative tension between the two figures. As a piece of historical ephemera, this print offers a glimpse into the cultural and social preoccupations of the Netherlands during the period, particularly regarding temperance and urban life. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, preserving the original line work and the accompanying typography of the source material.
