A refined seventeenth-century engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II, depicting the Man of Sorrows with precise anatomical detail and dramatic lighting.
This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler II depicts the Man of Sorrows, a traditional devotional subject showing Christ after the crucifixion. The figure is presented with a crown of thorns and visible wounds, his hands raised to display the stigmata. The composition is framed by heavy drapery, which adds a theatrical quality to the scene, consistent with the title 'Theatrum Passionis Christi' inscribed at the top. The Latin text below serves as a meditative prompt for the viewer, encouraging reflection on the suffering endured for humanity.
Sadeler, a member of the prominent Flemish family of engravers, was active in Prague at the court of Emperor Rudolf II. His technical skill is evident in the precise cross-hatching used to model the musculature of the torso and the delicate rendering of the facial features. The light source, emanating from behind Christ, creates a halo effect that separates the figure from the dark background. This use of chiaroscuro is characteristic of the period, providing a sense of volume and gravity to the subject. The print displays the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Sadeler workshop, which was responsible for disseminating the works of many contemporary painters through the medium of print. The balance between the anatomical detail and the devotional intent creates a work that is both a display of technical mastery and a tool for religious contemplation. The paper shows the natural ageing of a historical print, with the plate mark clearly visible, indicating its origin from a copper plate engraving process common in the early seventeenth century.
