This portrait, however, predates his full commitment to Orphism, showing a more direct engagement with the fragmented forms and multiple perspectives characteristic of early Cubist portraiture. Jean Metzinger, the sitter, was also a Cubist painter and theorist, making this work a portrait of one artist by another within a shared artistic milieu. The painting depicts Metzinger in a dark blue suit, a tulip prominently displayed on his lapel. The background is a flurry of colour and pattern, with a suggestion of another figure behind Metzinger. Delaunay's brushwork is visible and expressive, composed of small strokes of colour that build up the forms.
