A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicting a classical scene of figures gathered around a large, ornate basin.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a classical scene of figures gathered around a large, ornate basin. Bonasone, an Italian printmaker active in Bologna, produced this work during the mid-sixteenth century. The composition features a group of nude figures interacting within and around the tub, while a small putto figure appears in the upper right, suggesting a mythological or allegorical context. The architectural setting, defined by arched openings, provides a structured backdrop for the fluid, human forms.
Bonasone demonstrates his technical skill through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to model the musculature and skin tones of the figures. The engraving captures the interest in classical antiquity that defined the Italian Renaissance. The figures are arranged in a manner that balances the central mass of the tub with the surrounding individuals, creating a sense of movement and narrative interaction. The inclusion of a lion-head motif on the basin adds a decorative element, typical of the period's fascination with antique ornamentation.
As a printmaker, Bonasone was known for his ability to translate the works of other masters into the medium of engraving, as well as for his original compositions. This particular print reflects the period's focus on the human figure as the primary subject of artistic inquiry. The clear, precise lines and the deliberate use of light and shadow allow the viewer to examine the anatomical detail and the spatial relationships between the figures. This work remains a representative example of sixteenth-century Italian printmaking, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of the era.
