A candid archival photograph by Théodore van Lelyveld documenting street life in Ajaccio, Corsica, circa 1900.
This archival photograph by Théodore van Lelyveld captures a candid moment of urban life in Ajaccio, Corsica, at the turn of the twentieth century. The composition consists of two distinct photographic studies mounted on a grid-lined album page. The upper image depicts a man leaning against a tree in a public square, accompanied by a small dog, while the lower image shows a figure resting on the pavement near a building wall.
Van Lelyveld, a Dutch ethnographer and photographer, possessed a keen eye for the social conditions of the regions he visited. His approach to the camera is observational, prioritising the documentation of daily life over staged artifice. The images reflect the aesthetic of early twentieth-century travel photography, where the focus remained on the texture of the environment and the quiet, often overlooked, human presence within it. The harsh sunlight of the Mediterranean creates strong contrasts, casting deep shadows that define the figures and the architectural elements of the street.
These photographs provide a glimpse into the social fabric of Corsica during this period. The subjects, dressed in worn clothing and carrying simple walking sticks, are presented without sentimentality. The inclusion of the album page context adds a layer of historical authenticity, suggesting these prints were part of a larger personal or professional collection documenting the artist's travels. The work is a study in light, shadow, and the transient nature of public space. It captures the stillness of a midday rest, offering a quiet perspective on the lives of those inhabiting the periphery of the bustling town centre.
