A pair of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls featuring sacred Sanskrit mantras in fluid ink calligraphy by the monk Jakugon Taijō.
This pair of hanging scrolls features the Siddham script, a form of Sanskrit writing used in Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. Jakugon Taijō, a monk of the Shingon sect, produced these works to represent the Two Realms: the Womb Realm and the Diamond Realm. These realms form the core of Shingon cosmology, symbolising the union of wisdom and compassion.
The brushwork displays the characteristic fluidity of the Edo period. Each character is executed with a controlled application of ink, showing variations in pressure that create a sense of movement along the vertical axis. The ink density shifts from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, drier strokes, revealing the rhythm of the artist's hand. The composition is stark, prioritising the form of the characters against the neutral ground of the paper. This minimalism directs the viewer's attention to the spiritual weight of the mantras themselves.
In Japanese Buddhist practice, such scrolls were often used as objects of meditation. The act of writing these sacred syllables was considered a devotional exercise, merging the physical discipline of calligraphy with religious intent. The scrolls are mounted in a traditional format, which preserves the integrity of the paper while allowing for display in a tokonoma or a dedicated space for contemplation. The presence of red seals at the base of each scroll provides a subtle visual anchor, identifying the work as an authentic production of the artist. The balance between the verticality of the script and the negative space surrounding it creates a sense of equilibrium, reflecting the philosophical concepts of the Two Realms.
