A traditional Japanese hanging scroll depicting two Manzai street performers, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts two Manzai performers, traditional Japanese street entertainers who travelled during the New Year period to offer blessings and perform dances. The figures are rendered with the characteristic stylisation of the mid-Edo period, focusing on the rhythmic movement of their performance. The performer on the left wears a patterned black kimono adorned with floral motifs and carries a small hand drum, while the figure on the right holds a folding fan, partially obscuring their face. Their attire, featuring bold geometric and organic patterns, reflects the fashion of the era.
The composition is balanced against a simple, symbolic pine tree, which serves as a traditional emblem of longevity and the New Year season. The artist, Kengetsudō, employs a delicate line quality to define the facial features and the folds of the garments, contrasting with the more decorative, flat application of colour on the textiles. The muted, aged tone of the silk background provides a neutral space that allows the figures to occupy the centre of the viewer's attention without the need for complex spatial depth.
Manzai performances were a common subject in Ukiyo-e art, capturing the intersection of folk tradition and urban entertainment. This work avoids the theatrical exaggeration found in later prints, opting instead for a more grounded, observational approach to the performers. The attention to the specific patterns on the kimonos and the precise handling of the accessories suggests a keen interest in the material culture of the period. As a hanging scroll, the piece maintains a vertical orientation that complements the standing posture of the performers, creating a sense of forward motion as they appear to walk across the pictorial plane. The work offers a glimpse into the social customs of the Edo period through a refined, painterly lens.
